US power plant inventory

Operating US power plants and batteries from the August 2026 EIA-860M and the final 2025 EIA-860, with capacity, technology and operating dates.

Updated November 2, 2026

About the data

Every EIA plant with at least one generator or battery reported as operating in the August 2026 EIA-860M, which is provisional. Monthly records join the final 2025 EIA-860 on the exact EIA plant ID and generator ID.

The inventory holds 14,233 plants grouped into 14,225 projects, 529 of them hybrids, in the 50 states, DC and Puerto Rico. Records include nameplate capacity, technology, tracking, battery energy capacity, operating dates and the balancing-authority code each unit reports.

Every other dataset joins to a plant through its exact EIA plant and generator IDs, so the inventory is the place to start a screen by state, fuel, ISO, size or hybrid status.

Known gaps

Limits
  • Plant status is as of the latest EIA-860M month, not live.
  • EIA operating status is a provisional monthly survey report. It does not establish current dispatch, interconnection rights or deliverability.
  • Combined nameplate is equipment capacity, not a simultaneous export or interconnection limit.
  • Standby, out-of-service, proposed and retired units are excluded, so historical cohorts lean toward survivors.

Missing values stay missing: a null means the source has no usable record, never zero. Zero and negative values are shown as reported.

Questions it answers

  • Which operating battery projects in Texas are larger than 200 MW?
  • How much operating solar capacity does each ISO have?
  • Which hybrid solar and battery projects operate in Arizona?
